THE STAGE OF EVERYTHING
A study of different stage settings & the Internet of Things
Sangli Li MFA Thesis
My thesis explores the futuristic potentials and scenarios between users and devices. We are surrounded by multiple devices in life already. And it’s inevitable that we are getting more. Most of the current UX designs focus on the optimization and utilization, and try to get devices connected as the “Internet of Things”. It is fascinating that these connected devices makes our life way much easier, but at the end of day, an app is an app, it’s only a tool to use, and it’s, sadly, boring. How can we manage these devices beyond simple optimization and utilization? How can we create more emotional engagement with these devices rather than a functioning tool? The project get inspiration from various kinds of stage settings, opera is particular. Instead of being simple, opera uses singer, orchestra, music, light, stage, and costumes to enrich a relatively simple story. Instead of saying “less is more”, this thesis project states: “more is more”.
